Tanzania launches 300-man strong anti-poaching force

Vice president Samia Suluhu Hassan (Saturday) presided at the inauguration of the paramilitary group tasked with combating poaching and illegal trafficking of wildlife products.

The squad started with 313 members, both female and male personnel in total, and it will operate under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism.

The government has dedicated over 25% of the countries land to wildlife protected areas (national parks, conservation areas, game reserves and game controlled areas).

Tanzania was previously known as "the epicenter of Africa's elephant poaching crisis" after a government census revealed loss of a catastrophic 60% of its elephants between 2009 and 2014.

Safari News: The Keen Project Builds One-Off Porsche 911 Off-Road Safari Cars

Leh Keen is a professional race car driver and expert on Porsches being that he drove them professionally for many years.
You may remember Keen from last year's /DRIVE on NBC Sports season when he helped hosts Matt Farah, Chris Harris, and Mike Spinelli race in the ChumpCar VIR24 endurance race with their 1988 BMW 325is. Beyond thrashing Porsche's on track, Keen has another hobby: Making some of the best off-road Porsches in the world.
Keen recently sat down with VINwiki to talk about his company, The Keen Project. Started in 2013, The Keen Project is where the Georgia native builds one-off Porsche 911 off-road Safari cars that have gained loads of praise across the interwebs. Keen says it was always about making a Porsche he wanted for himself, but one that may be interesting to other people too. He is a fan of Porsches reimagined by Singer and even has an Akira Nakai built Rauh-Welt Begriff Porsche to call his own. He sees those cars as works of art and strives to create his own versions of that with a completely different Porsche goal.
"We are all about having fun. We don't try to overthink anything or overbuild anything. Just the right ingredients to make the car happy and the driver happy," Keen told  The Drive. "Most of the donor cars we get have been sitting in a garage for a decade or more and need some rust fixed, chassis gone through, and the engine prepped. In the end, the cars get a new life and are far far away from that garage they were sitting in covered in dust."
Best way to follow Leh and The Keen Project is his Instagram. Check out VINwiki's 'The Keen Project' video below.

Photographic Tourism to Beef up Tanzania’s Economy

Photographic hunting is the next card Tanzania is ready to play to attract tourists' attention, luring them to one of the most competitive tourism destinations in Africa. The Tanzania Tourism Board is set to ensure that the tourism sector in the country delivers the best and becomes the best globally. The second highest raking foreign exchange earner in the country after minerals is tourism.
Plans are underway to ensure the strategy is tackled effectively. The new strategy will pay off with Tanzania boasting of a bevy of diversity in culture, geographic landscapes, and food among other aspects. The aim is to capture tourists’ attention to what they love and would want to experience. It would be an effective measure to meet the market’s demand directly and with maximum satisfaction.
With the plan, Tanzania hopes to bring in more revenue to sustain the country's economy, and fund other developments that are taking over in the country. This goal will help the tourism board understand the market and what customary changes need to be made in order to be more relevant and appealing to the audience. The country has been marketing and branding their tourism sector to revive the spark that once was.

The best wildlife viewing months in Tanzania are during the Dry season from late June to October. The best chance of seeing the wildebeest migration in the Serengeti is during June and July and the time to see the wildebeest calving is late January to February. The southern and western circuit parks are best visited during the dry-season (June to October), unlike the more popular northern circuit parks that can be visited year-round. Tarangire is the only exception, since its wildlife viewing is considerably better in the dry-season as well.
June to October - Dry Season
  • June and July are the best months to see the wildebeest migration.
  • Animals are easier to spot since they concentrate around waterholes and rivers and there is less vegetation.
  • There are fewer mosquitoes because there is little to no rain. Skies are clear and most days are sunny.
  • Even though most tourists visit during the Dry season, the parks still don't feel crowded, except for the Seronera area in the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater.
  • Mornings and nights get cold. It's recommended to bring warm clothing for morning game drives in open vehicles during the months of June, July and August.
November to May - Wet Season
  • Late January to February is the time to see the calving in the southern Serengeti. This is an excellent time to see predator action.
  • The scenery is green and beautiful. It's low season, meaning lower rates and less crowded parks.
  • Although wildlife is easier to spot in the Dry season, you'll still see plenty and most northern circuit parks offer good year-round game viewing.
  • Migratory birds are present and bird watching is at its best.
  • Except for March, April and May, rains are mostly short afternoon showers and seldom have a negative impact on your trip.
  • March to May is the peak of the Wet season.
  • Most big wildlife has migrated out of Tarangire NP and game viewing in Katavi, Selous and Ruaha is clearly better during the Dry season.

Best time to go to Tanzania by major park

The Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater offer good wildlife viewing throughout the year. June and July are the best months for seeing the migration and February is the best month for the wildebeest calving. The dry months offer good game viewing throughout Tanzania. Tarangire and the southern and western circuit parks (including Katavi, Selous and Ruaha) are best visited in the Dry season, from June to October.
